Dear Prayer Partners,

December was a busy month.  About three months before Christmas, Christina had started preparation for the children’s performance for our Christmas celebration in Durban.  From picking songs, learning the Chinese lyrics, to dancing with challenging moves, every Sunday the children were cooperating and practicing diligently.  Due to our regular absence, some parents would take over the practice sessions while we were away.  Christmas was on Monday.  The Chinese wholesale center in Durban had a three-day break so brothers and sisters were able to come to the Christmas celebration.  There were around 70 people in attendance.  The children’s performance was a great success, and the children reaped the joy of serving God!

After Durban’s Christmas celebration, we flew to Cape Town for a four-day-three-night family retreat held in Paarl.  The theme was “The Abundant Life.”  Pastor Liu used passages from the Gospel of John and I John to lead everyone through “knowing the origin of life,” “the life of following Christ” and “living the abundant life.”  We also showed two movies that corresponded with the main theme.  The first one was “Simon Birch” which emphasized the real meaning and value of life.  The other one was “The Shack” which depicted God’s unfailing love for us even in times of crisis.

In addition, we had two workshops.  One workshop was on parenting.  Ko-Ta explained the underlying motives and thinking patterns of children for parents to respond with correct parenting tactics.  The other workshop was on family health.  Brother Huang is a practicing GP doctor in South Africa.  He detailed the medical system in South Africa, how to choose family insurance as well as daily prevention and emergency procedures.  It was well received as there were so many important and helpful information for every family.

The last night was New Year Eve.  We had a barbeque and great sharing time.  Everyone felt the closeness in Christ!  A family just joined our church, and the husband was very quiet.  Through this retreat we discovered that he actually was very open and enjoyed fellowship with other Christians.  A sister’s brother just arrived in South Africa three days before the retreat.  He was impressed with the warmth and love in Christ’s family.  He continues to come to church after the retreat.  Last Sunday before church, Ko-Ta had the chance to evangelize to him through explaining the Holy Communion.  Praise the Lord; he was very willing to further understand what Christianity is about.  Please pray for Mr. Zhou’s salvation.

There is a serious drought in the West Cape Province.  At this moment, Cape Town is under Level 6 water restriction.  That means everyone is allowed a daily water consumption of 50 liters.  Cape Town has already started the countdown to Day Zero (at present, it is set in the middle of April).  From that day on, everyone can only get 25 liters of water per day from one of the 200 water stations.  That will certainly create tensions on Cape Town’s people, its economy as well as law and order.  It may also affect the ministry of the Cape Town church.  We will have to wait and see.

Prayer Requests:

  1. Please pray for rain in Cape Town.
  2. Please pray for Mr. Zhou so he would not just analyze Christianity but knowing his need to repent of his sins to be saved.
  3. Please continue to pray for the ministry in Cape Town. We are planning to start a second Bible study group on the north side of town.
  4. Please continue to pray for our safety as we travel to different cities and towns.

In His service,
Ko-Ta & Christina

Dear Prayer Partners,

Similar to other parts of the world, South Africa experienced severe weather in November with strong winds, thunderstorms and hails.  This extreme phenomenon resulted in many natural disasters as well as lost lives.  In mid-November, there was a news report of a deadly car accident in Bloemfontein.  From the description of the accident location and the car model, we knew that the victim was our Sister Su.   We met Sister Su when she came to work in one of the manufacturing factories in Botshabelo about 15 years ago.  She was not a Christian then.  She suffered from motion sickness, and Ko-Ta had to keep his car speed under 10 km/hour whenever she was in the car.  Fortunately, we only needed to travel within the industrial area, and she kept on coming to our meetings.  We prayed for her illness, and she miraculously experienced God’s healing.  A few months later, she accepted Christ and was baptized.

After she became a Christian, Sister Su followed Christ whole-heartedly with a genuine faith.  She faced a lot of unfair treatments when she started her own factory with her husband.  However, she did not harbor any hard feelings but always filled with thanksgiving for God’s providence and protection.  As many factories left that area, our ministry at that location was suspended a couple years later.  Since she was far from Bloemfontein, she was not able to come to church regularly.  Nevertheless, her faith remained strong.  Whenever we visited her, she received us joyfully.  At times we would help her as her translator with customers and labor authorities.  It was not easy running a factory, but she never showed any worries or complaints.  She always remained calm because God was her Lord and that gave her joy and peace in her heart.  Her single-hearted faith was a true testimony of God’s faithfulness.

The Western Cape in South Africa produces many different kinds of fruit.  The Cape Town church went to pick strawberries in early November.  In addition to tasting sweet juicy strawberries, everyone bought some home at half of the market price.  This weekend we will be going cherry picking and barbeque.  Praise the Lord, these activities let everyone get to know each other better.  We are also able to build up relationships with the congregation.  This is really the stepping stone for our service to the church.

Recently, a few brothers and sisters started to contact us for counseling.  They opened themselves up to us and seek our help.  Their trust in us makes us feel privileged to be able to fulfill God’s call.  We shared with them the lessons we learned; we prayed with them; we comforted and encouraged them to continue to walk with God.  It is exciting to see the down casted stood up, willing to own up their mistakes, pick up the pieces and walk in faith again.  We experience the mercy and mighty work of God in those who are broken and contrite.  Please pray for this special need.  May the Lord’s grace be with them.  Please also pray for us that we will speak with words of wisdom from above.

Prayer Requests:

  1. May the Lord send more workers to South Africa.
  2. Please pray for wisdom for us in counseling those in need in the Cape Town church.
  3. Please continue to pray for the preparation and messages for the December retreat in Cape Town.
  4. Please continue to pray for the ministries in Durban, Cape Town and Newcastle.
  5. Please continue to pray for our safety as we travel to different cities and towns.

In His service,
Ko-Ta & Christina

Dear Prayer Partners,

We first met Mrs. Yao at a dinner party in one of our brothers’ home.  Our conversation somehow touched on the authority of the Bible.  She mentioned that she had read the Bible before but religion did not appeal to her at all.  She neither had the interest nor the time to explore.  However, after she accepted Christ, she admitted that at that time she was actually under a lot of stress due to marriage problems.  In order to make a good impression on others, she just put on a happy front.  There are indeed a lot of people around us like her.  Their eyes are blinded; they do not know God.  They feel helpless when facing life’s challenges; they do not know that faith in Christ is the solution.  Without a clear life direction and a correct value system, people are drowning in despair.  Many see the gospel as a religion, not realizing it as the Word of Life.  We need to make it known to them, “Faith in Christ brings about an abundant life; it is not an optional religious choice.”

Praise the Lord!  He led Mrs. Yao to recognize that faith in Christ is not another religion, but man’s way of life that brings hope and confidence.  She saw that her new friends (the brother and his wife) also had similar family issues and worries, even fights and arguments.  At the same time, she found that there was an unseen influence in their family that gave them hope in overcoming their problems.  Any resentment toward each other was resolved through forgiveness.  This kind of love was an eye opener; she wanted it so much in her life.  As she got to know them more, she began to attend some church activities with them.  People around us can see through our pretense.  If we want to lead them to Christ, we need to be real in living out our faith.

Three months after Mrs. Yao attended church regularly, she was baptized.  Her spiritual growth was not without struggles, especially in the areas of submission, patience, forgiveness and gentleness.  When we visited her, we continued to encourage her and share with her our own experiences.  She then really committed herself to live out her faith.  She shares with us that now she is gentler and does not easily get angry like before.  Her obvious changes affected her husband to change, too.  In turn, she found herself easier to submit to her husband.  Her kids also become more orderly and calm.  Blessed are those who know the truth and practice it!  (James 1:25)

As we noticed that more interaction is needed among the Cape Town church members, we decided to form different cell groups to facilitate and encourage sharing, support as well as praying for each other.  The Young Adult group and Women’s group just had their first meetings this month, and the response is encouraging.  We plan to start other groups in the coming months.

Prayer Requests:

  1. May the Lord send more workers to South Africa.
  2. Please pray for the formation and planning of the new cell groups in the Cape Town church.
  3. Please pray for the outreach in Stellenbosch, especially the salvation of our new friend Mr. Wen. May the Lord lead us to come in contact with more Chinese.
  4. Please pray for the preparation and messages for the December retreat in Cape Town.
  5. As we have to rearrange our schedule in serving three churches, please pray that no ministry is adversely affected.
  6. Please continue to pray for our safety as we travel to different cities and towns.

Dear Prayer Partners,

Praise the Lord!  Our outreach in Mooi River came to harvest!  Sister Kuo was baptized on the first Sunday of July!  We had the opportunity of meeting Sister Kuo about four years ago.  We gave her gospel tracts and music DVD’s and kept sporadic contacts with her.  Due to her busy schedule in assisting her husband in the big business, we could only visit her and her husband once in a while.  The progress might seem slow, but in due time, the seed began to sprout and came to fruition.

Sister Kuo is an extremely smart and capable person.  She used to be so confident of her own ability that she believed there was nothing impossible to her.  However, when her daughter was sick and the doctors were unable to help, she felt powerless for the first time in her life.  At that point, she turned to God.  Her daughter experienced God’s divine power and was healed; she accepted Jesus as her personal Savior.  However, Sister Kuo still had reservations as she had some questions needed to be answered; her work soon occupied her life, and her quest for truth was set aside.  We appeared at their factory when she felt deeply isolated.  God called on her again through our encounters.  We shared with her numerous testimonies of God’s love and faithfulness; we prayed for her; we continued to nurture the seed of the gospel to grow.  We were so excited when she decided to be baptized!  The key to mission is being faithful, whether circumstances look hopeful or not.  The Lord only asks for our faithfulness; and He will make things beautiful in His time!  There are people around you who need to know the truth.  Like the Ethiopian eunuch, he needs you to be as obedient to the Lord as Philip.  Would you be willing to go?

There are around 400,000 Chinese in South Africa.  After twenty years of evangelistic efforts of many missionaries, ministries were established in different towns and cities.  Nevertheless, the number of missionaries was not enough to care for all the existing churches and fellowships.  As a result, we need to be on the road 2/3 of the time every month.  Who would come to share the load?  Please pray for more workers in this mission field.

Sister Miao was transferred to Lesotho soon after she was baptized last year.  She came back for a short time last month.  We chatted with her after worship service and were happy to notice her spiritual growth.  Despite the difficulties in attending church, she is able to sustain and grow in her faith through diligent learning over the internet.  She shared with us that she overcame many pressure and hardship in work through prayer.  She is so thankful to have Christ in her life as her refuge.  We could see it in her eyes the confidence of a “seasoned sailor.”  She is also grateful that her husband is very supportive of her faith.  Since he had a higher educational background, he would search out Christian literature and explain them to her.  As she will be returning to Lesotho by the end of this month, we gave her a reference Bible for more in-depth study.  Please pray for the salvation of her husband, Mr. Ding.  The joy of mission is seeing people grasp the essence of the gospel and lives being transformed.

Prayer Requests:

  1. May the Lord send more workers to South Africa.
  2. Please pray for the salvation of Sister Kuo and Sister Miao’s husbands.
  3. We thank God for leading us to move into a new apartment close to the Cape Town university campus. May the Lord guide us in establishing the student ministry in Cape Town.
  4. Please pray for the on-going Bible study meetings in northern Cape Town and in Stellenbosch.
  5. Please pray for Newcastle’s Bible study meetings on the first two Thursday and Friday evenings as well as day time one-on-one discipleship trainings. May our brothers and sisters grow in faith and love.
  6. Please continue to pray for the seekers in Durban that they will accept the Lord as their personal Savior.
  7. Please continue to pray for our safety as we travel to different cities and towns.
